We are aiming to present high quality boulder and other opal which we dig up, cut, polish and turn into wearable stones and jewelry.
Hand mining for boulder opal is a physically demanding practice connecting us with the mystical geological heritage of Queensland, Australia. We are working a claim in Koroit in South Queensland. The tools we use are basic. A generator to power everything, a long throw hoist to get the mullock out of the mine and an electric Jack hammer to dig tunnels and get us to the opal.
To begin with we use markers to identify possible areas for digging. Next we get test holes drilled to get a precise idea of the location of the opal. Then we have a shaft drilled to get us on the right level for digging which can be anywhere between 4 and 15 meters. Once the hoist is installed we are ready to dig.
The opal rough found is then carefully sliced and the stones cut and polished.
Some of the finished stones then have to be drilled to either have a bail fitted or to be put on a leather string. Others we set in silver to craft them into pendants, rings and ear rings.
